Purpose: In the present study, differences in tear volume, tear film stability, and lens movement between normal and dry eyes with daily wear contact lenses that are thin, have a high water content, and are made of soft materials were investigated.
Methods: Daily wear contact lenses with a high water content were applied to normal and dry eyes classified by non-invasive tear break-up time, and their reflex tear volume, tear film stability, blinking rates, and lens movement on the cornea were compared and analyzed.
Results: In dry eyes with daily wear contact lenses with a high water content, the reflex tear volume and blinks tended to slightly increase, while NIBUT significantly reduced compared to normal eyes. Lens centration was not significantly different between normal and dry eyes; however, an unstable pattern of lens movement was still seen in dry eyes even when lens movement had stabilized in normal eyes.
Conclusions: This study revealed that the tear film becomes unstable, and the stability of lens movement may be problematic in dry eyes with daily wear contact lenses having a high water content.
